Your path forward
Six steps.
One clear place to begin.
Every business is different. These steps provide a useful starting framework while sending you directly to the agencies responsible for current requirements.
Before making legal, tax, financing, or lease decisions, consider speaking with an attorney, accountant, lender, or business advisor.
Startup checklist
From idea to opening day.
Work through the steps in the order that fits your business. Some may happen at the same time.
01
Plan
Build the foundation
Define your customer, offer, startup costs, pricing, projected revenue, and funding needs. A simple business plan can expose questions before they become expensive problems.
02
Organize
Choose a name + structure
Choose the legal structure that fits your ownership, liability, and tax situation. Check name availability, complete the appropriate South Dakota filing, and determine whether a DBA is needed.

Determine whether you need a federal Employer Identification Number and which South Dakota tax licenses apply to your activities. Requirements can differ by industry and what you sell.
04
Locate
Confirm your Tea location
Before signing a lease, beginning construction, or ordering a sign, contact City of Tea Planning & Zoning to confirm allowed use, site requirements, permits, inspections, and occupancy needs.
05
Prepare
Get ready to operate
Set up business banking, bookkeeping, payment processing, insurance, contracts, and any industry-specific licensing. Review South Dakota employer registration requirements before hiring.

Connect with the community
Build awareness before opening day. Introduce your business, create accurate online listings, connect with neighboring businesses, and use Chamber opportunities to become visible locally.
A Tea-specific first call
Before you sign a lease.
A space that looks perfect may still require zoning approval, a change of use, site review, building improvements, or inspections. Contact the City early so you understand the timeline and requirements before committing.
